DJ Epik
When talking about independent Sacramento Hip Hop, only one name comes to mind: DJ Epik! Epik’s been working as a DJ/producer in Sacramento for 15 + years and is a 3 time Sacramento News & Review Sammy winner for best DJ. His beats are beloved and used by such Hip Hop legends as Mac Dre, Too Short, Living Legends, Brotha Lynch Hung, and Mos Def.
DJ Epik is also an original member of the Decibel Devils and regularly works with close friends John CrookOne Molina (Team Sleep, Decibel Devils) and Frank Delgado (Deftones, Decibel Devils).
Before the days of computers and Digital Audio Workstations, Epik began learning the basics of DJing making mix-tapes in his bedroom, honing his DJ skills doing pause mixes. He would later learn to DJ on a pair of belt drive turntables and karaoke machine. Using his natural creativity to construct his own bootleg setup helped DJ Epik truly learn, understand, appreciate, and ultimately master the craft of turntable mixing/producing!
Then in 1998, DJ Epik was introduced to the MPC 2000 sampler-sequencer workstation, and music was never the same! With his unique ability to dissect and analyze the formulas of music, it was only natural that he would go on to become one of the region’s most admired and sought after independent Producers! Though originally inspired by Hip Hop, DJ Epik takes his inspiration from a plethora of sources. RUN DMC, Dr. Dre., DJ Premier, Phil Collins, Herbie Hancock, and Lalo Schifrin are just a few examples of his eclectic influences. From Hip Hop and R&B, to Classic Rock, Pop and Jazz:
Having such diverse influences has caused DJ Epik to develop a classic, timeless sound that truly transcends all genres. Epik has transitioned back into Club DJing and is once again doing music full time, constantly working hard to bring more free or inexpensive entertainment to the people of Sacramento, California, and eventually the World! DJ Epik is gaining momentum, so keep your eyes peeled and ears open for the Legendary DJ Epik!
